Challenging behavior can be defined as “any repeated pattern of behavior or perception of behavior that interferes with or is at risk with optimal learning or engagement in pro-social interactions with peers and adults” (Dunlap, Strain, Fox, Carta, Conroy, Smith, & Sailor, 2006, 29-45).

A startling fact: 40% of students are said to engage in at least one challenging behavior per day at the preschool level, according to their classroom teachers (Jolivette & Steed, 2010).
